Maheshwar is a centre of handicraft workers since 5th century. Even today best quality handloom sarees are manufactured here. These have special identity and fame all over the world. This project was the result of Ahilyabai's foresightness. Rajmata laid down the foundation of this tiny industry. She brought and settled craftsmen from Hyderabad,Karnataka and Malwa. These sarees are made of cotton & silk. These have brilliant designs like checks,linings and beautiful borders of one to six inches breadth.These designs were inspired from the local monuments like temples & Ghats. Each saree takes 3 to 15 days depending upon design,pattern & colour combination. Maheshwar has major market of these saree trade. Unfortunately some workers engaged in this industry are now searching other revenues due to low income in this business.However some NGOs like Rewa Society are trying to save this traditional industry. Every tourist visiting Maheshvar purchases this saree.
